Overview

Whisker Delight started as a product idea and grew into a serious brand-building exercise. I spent significant time developing recipes, refining product combinations, thinking through brand positioning, testing strategy, packaging, pricing, and how to eventually grow it into something shelf-ready.

Brand Direction

The brand direction from the start was premium:

  • Made in the USA
  • All-natural ingredients
  • No preservatives or additives
  • Intentional, premium presentation

I didn't want it to feel generic. I wanted it to feel like a real brand with standards behind it.

Product Development

The work was deeply iterative. I tested recipe changes, simplified processes, and thought through shapes, textures, dehydration methods, and production flow.

Launch Products

The initial product line focused on simple, high-quality recipes:

  • Pumpkin Oatmeal Dog Treats
  • Peanut Butter Banana Dog Treats
  • Apple Cinnamon Dog Treats
  • Crunchy Tuna Cat Treats
  • Chicken Catnip Cat Treats

I later explored jerky treats and found them preferable to baked treats — simpler recipes (often just 2-3 ingredients) with better results.

Production Setup

  • KitchenAid 5-quart stand mixer
  • Magic Mill dehydrator
  • Silicone pyramid molds for cat-friendly shapes
  • Food processor and blender for ingredient prep

Business Strategy

  • Launch: eCommerce first
  • Growth: Wholesale through Faire
  • Long-term: Shelf placement in retail stores
  • Testing: Exclusive testing group with questionnaires and curated treat boxes
  • Pricing: Positioned as premium, reflecting quality and production standards
  • Giving back: Planned donations to a dog charity

Future Expansion Ideas

  • Frozen yogurt treats
  • Meat sticks and jerky varieties
  • Dehydrated fruits and vegetables
  • Veggie sticks
  • Branded merchandise, toys, and accessories

What I Learned

  • Product development is iterative and detail-heavy
  • Simplicity matters in production — fewer ingredients, cleaner process
  • Brand positioning should align with real product standards, not just marketing
  • Customer testing can be part of the experience, not just validation
  • Shelf-ready thinking changes how you make decisions from day one
