Overview

TapInsight started as a simple idea: QR codes work, but they're clunky, visually noisy, and friction-heavy. I wanted something cleaner, faster, and more natural for real-world interactions.

TapInsight replaces QR codes with NFC-powered tap interactions. Instead of opening a camera and scanning a code, users simply tap their phone against an NFC tag and instantly access the content behind it.

How It Works

At its core, TapInsight is a URL rerouting platform. Each NFC tag points to a TapInsight URL, and that URL can dynamically redirect users to any destination:

  • Websites and landing pages
  • Restaurant menus
  • Digital business cards
  • Social media profiles
  • Promotions and campaigns
  • Event pages
  • Product information

The key advantage: businesses can update where a tag points without replacing the physical tag itself.

Beyond Software

This project involved more than just the software concept. I also worked through:

  • Hardware design — NFC tag layout, materials, and form factor
  • Manufacturing — vendor communication, production specs, lead times
  • Quality assurance — ferrite layer thickness, read distance on different surfaces, adhesive quality
  • Shipping logistics — DHL/FedEx evaluation, international vendor coordination
  • Product design — clean circular tags with tap icons, instructions, and branding

Use Cases

  • Restaurants — table-side menus and ordering
  • Retail — product information and promotions
  • Events — attendee engagement and check-in
  • Real Estate — property information at listings
  • Business Cards — digital profiles that stay current
  • Marketing — campaign tracking and dynamic content

What I Learned

  • Physical and digital products require thinking about hardware reliability and software flexibility together
  • Vendor communication needs clear technical questions and specifications
  • Simple user experiences like tapping instead of scanning can significantly improve adoption
  • Designing real-world tech products means thinking about manufacturing constraints, materials, and environments
