Clutch-Drive EV Concept

The problem

One-pedal driving took away the driver's control of momentum. In today's EVs, lifting off the accelerator always triggers regenerative braking, so the car slows whether you want it to or not.

You can't run up to one stop sign and glide 30 feet into the next one.
You can't blip the motor at a light and feel the car load up before launch.
Enthusiasts say EVs are fast but don't feel like driving. That feeling keeps many GT3 RS, M3 and manual-Miata owners in gas cars.

The concept

Clutch-Drive adds a third pedal that lets the driver disconnect the motor from the wheels, using a magnetic clutch controlled entirely by software. It is an optional drive mode. Everyday one-pedal driving stays the default.

Clutch-by-wire pedal. It has a position sensor and an active force-feedback actuator. Software sets the pedal's weight and bite point, so it can feel like a light GT3 clutch or a heavy vintage one.
Magnetic clutch on the motor shaft. A magnetorheological (MR) fluid clutch handles smooth slip and engagement. An electromagnetic dog lock holds the connection at zero slip and zero power while cruising. With no friction plates, nothing wears out.
Software does the rest. The drive unit controller blends motor torque, clutch torque and regen in real time. The same hardware can feel different in each mode: Comfort, Sport or Track, with configurable launch and coast behavior.
Real sound. With the clutch in, the free-spinning motor makes its natural whine when the driver revs it. Software can tune the inverter's switching to shape and amplify that sound, so no fake engine audio is needed.

How it drives

Coast (phase one, the easy win). Press the clutch, and regen and drive torque drop to zero. The car rolls freely, so you can carry speed from one stop sign to the next and use the brake pedal when you want to stop.
Rev (phase two). With the clutch in at a light, the throttle spins the free motor up to a software limit. You hear the real electric whine rise and fall.
Launch (phase two, the curveball). Let the clutch out, and the MR clutch feeds motor torque in along the bite curve you set with your foot. The stored rotor energy (about 10 kJ at 6,000 rpm) is small compared with the car's kinetic energy (about 665 kJ at 60 mph). So the clutch kick is mostly about feel and control, not extra speed. Traction control still has the final say.

Key specs at a glance

These are concept targets for a single-motor rear drive unit with roughly 450 Nm of motor torque and a 9:1 reduction. They are engineering estimates, not tested figures.

Item	Target
Clutch location	Motor output shaft, before the reduction gear (high speed, low torque)
Clutch type	MR-fluid multi-disc (8 shear gaps) + electromagnetic dog lock
Torque capacity	~600 Nm at full field (1.35x motor peak)
Engage / release time	< 30 ms (field build-up), dog lock < 80 ms
Locked-cruise power draw	0 W (dog lock holds mechanically)
Added mass	~9 kg
Free-rev limit (clutch in)	9,000 rpm, software-set
Pedal	By-wire, 120 mm travel, force feedback 40–140 N, adjustable bite point
Slip energy, hard launch	~70 kJ per launch, about +46 °C in 3 kg of clutch mass

Feasibility and next steps

The concept is feasible with today's technology. Coasting can ship as a software update on existing cars. The magnetic clutch is the part that needs engineering work.

Prior art. Toyota patented a simulated manual for EVs in 2022, with a clutch pedal that drives fake engine behavior. Hyundai's Ioniq 5 N simulates gear shifts and plays synthetic engine sound. Clutch-Drive is different in three ways: it focuses on coasting and momentum control, it can physically decouple the motor, and it uses the motor's real sound instead of a fake one.
Risks. MR fluid needs thermal management and long-term sealing. Software must re-engage the clutch automatically for stability control, ABS and Autopilot/FSD.
Path: (1) software-only coast mode on today's cars; (2) bench rig with an MR clutch on a drive unit; (3) test car with the by-wire pedal; (4) option package for performance trims.
